AAR AND SBL RECEPTIONS A BIG SUCCESS
12/8/2009
More than sixty scholars attended our breakfast receptions at the ARR and the SBL in November. At the AAR in Montreal, Peter Ochs announced the publication of Crisis, Call, and Leadership in the Abrahamic Traditions (Palgrave Macmillan), edited by Peter and Stacy Johnson. As a Muslim contributor to the book, Maria Dakake (pictured) shared about being deeply inspired by her participation in the Center's inquiry on Scriptural Reasoning that brought together Jewish, Christian and Muslim scholars for lively conversation on their sacred texts. Willem Drees, our Witherspoon Fellow for the 2008-2009 academic year, professor at Leiden University, and current editor of Zygon, introduced the book that he wrote at the Center, Religion and Science in Context: A Guide to the Debates (Routledge).
At the SBL in New Orleans, Matt Skinner, resident member for the 2008-2009 academic year and professor at Luther Seminary, introduced the book he wrote at the Center, The Trial Narratives: Conflict, Power, and Identity in the New Testament (Westminster John Knox Press). NT Wright, a senior member in residence for the 2009-2010 academic year and Bishop of Durham, gave an update on his current research on the apostle Paul, which will become the fourth volume of Christian Origins and the Question of God.
Many in attendance expressed their gratitude for this chance to hear about the exciting work of the Center and to catch up with colleagues.
