About Our Scholars

João Biehl

The Center unites scholars of national and international standing from theology and the sciences, medicine, law, social sciences and humanities to investigate interdisciplinary questions and problems facing religion and society. The Center faces the vital challenge to help give positive direction and assistance to the affairs of humankind.

To that end, the Center selects post-doctorate scholars of rare intellectual promise, and provides them with an atmosphere in which they are able to fulfill that promise. This involves the excitement of discovering individuals ahead of their time, and of giving seasoned scholars the opportunity for mature reflection.

Promising and prominent scholars are invited to become full-time, resident Members for periods of up to one academic year, September to June. Members fund their time in residence from external sources but are provided with an office at Luce Hall and subsidized housing. They may also apply for one of the fellowships the Center offers to eligible scholars. During the period of residency, Members are released from all duties and responsibilities of regular employment. With interdisciplinary inquiries involving more than one person or where an appropriate scholar cannot be released from full-time duties, the Center may issue an appointment on a non-resident basis as a visiting Member. Eminent scholars in residence or leading interdisciplinary inquiries may be invited by the Director to serve as senior Members for the duration.
