In the university, books and articles matter because they establish legitimacy, trust, and authority. They show why an argument is sound, why it deserves attention, and why it should shape teaching, research, and debate. But at CTI, publications are not an end in themselves; they are the hinge between inquiry and influence.

Why theology still matters in the modern university

Universities are rich in expertise, but increasingly poor in wisdom. Many of the most urgent questions facing society—about meaning, responsibility, ethics, technology, hope, and human flourishing—fall between disciplines or are addressed only in fragments.

The Center of Theological Inquiry (CTI) exists to ensure that theology remains a rigorous, credible, and generative discipline within the intellectual life of the university. We believe that without theology, universities lose their capacity to ask—and answer—the deepest questions well.

How renewal begins: deep, sustained inquiry

The work begins with patient expectation. Scholars come to CTI as senior academics already working at the highest levels of their fields. Freed from short‑term pressures, they pursue deep, interdisciplinary inquiry into the big questions of our age—often discovering, through long and demanding research, what the real work actually needs to be.

This kind of inquiry cannot be rushed. But it is precisely this depth that enables theology to contribute something distinctive and necessary to the university.
